Ethiopia launched the National Council of Community-Based Health Insurance which is said to address health-related problems and ensure fair and clear health insurance services in the country

Speaking at the launching program, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen said the government has been implementing various health policies and strategies to improve health service delivery and create a healthy society. “To provide fair, clear, quality health service and community-based insurance, it is crucial to stretch a reliable finance system in the country.”

The Deputy Premier emphasized the expansion of the insurance service throughout the country while particular emphasis is given to addressing the low-income and rural communities. “To build a prestigious society, a health insurance service is highly needed in a country like Ethiopia.”

Demeke continued: “Even if a large population is getting the health insurance service in the nation, we have to move in a committed way.”

In her welcoming speech, Health Minister Lia Tadesse (MD) stated that Ethiopia’s health service coverage reached 90 percent at this time while the nation’s life expectancy has grown from 46 to 66 years.

The Minister, who recalled the Ethiopian Health Insurance Service was launched in 2011 as a pilot program in four states and 13 districts, highlighted that the scheme is now expanded into 894 districts across the country and reached over 45 million people. In the 2021/2022 fiscal year, over 4.8 billion Birr was collected from membership payments.

For Ethiopian Health Insurance Service Director General Frehiwot Abebe, the health insurance service is instrumental to society to get medical treatment at health centers and nearby hospitals in a convenient and cost-effective manner.
